Several issues can cause your AC to cool your home poorly or blow warm air. A common culprit is a dirty air filter. A clogged filter limits the circulation your system needs to keep your home comfortable.
The problem can also stem from low refrigerant levels. The refrigerant is responsible for absorbing heat from your indoor air and carrying it outside. When the level is low, the system can’t remove enough heat, which leads to weak cooling.
Another possibility is a malfunctioning thermostat. If the thermostat is misreading the indoor temperature or failing to communicate with the air handler, the system may cycle at the wrong times or fail to cool altogether.
Short cycling is when your AC turns on and off too quickly. A normal, efficient system completes a cooling cycle in about 20-30 minutes. If your AC shuts down prematurely, it may be due to electrical issues, a failing compressor, airflow restrictions, or load miscalculations.
Water leaks can result from a damaged drain pan, a broken condensate pump, or a clogged drain line. ACs have natural dehumidification properties because when they cool the indoor air, the moisture present condenses on the cold evaporator coils. The system’s drainage components normally remove the moisture. It drips into the drain pan and flows through the condensate line and safely out of the home. If you have a damaged or blocked drainage path, you will have a leak.
Refrigerant leaks because of mechanical issues, such as a worn service valve, a damaged coil, or a weakened sealant joint. When refrigerant escapes, the system loses its ability to absorb heat effectively. This leads to weak cooling, longer run times, and, in many cases, ice formation on the evaporator coil.
Unusual sounds and odors are confirmations of problems that already exist. For example, a hissing or bubbling sound paired with a sweet, chemical smell often indicates a refrigerant leak. A banging or rattling sound means something inside the system is already loose or broken. Musty odors point to moisture issues or microbial growth in the ductwork or around the evaporator coil.

- Insufficient cooling
- Short cycling
- Water or refrigerant leaks
